Like with most of the
previous train rides, we bought our train tickets in a vending
machine, because the machine tends to speak better English than the
clerks behind their counters. This time though, at a crucial moment,
the machine chose to switch to Russian, and only from the dubiously
high price printed on the tickets could we suspect that something did
not go as planned. The same evening, as the train rolled to the
station, it occurred to us that we had acquired Kupé
(2nd class) tickets instead of the usual Platskartny!
Well, the price was compensated for example with a compulsory
breakfast, water bottle, sandals, chocolate, shoe spoon and shoe
shine tissue. Since we would leave the train quite early (6 AM), our
breakfast was served already before sleeping time. It included:
- fish (omul?)
- mashed potato
- peas
- corn
- 2 slices of bread
- 2 slices of cheese
- 2 slices of sausage
The next morning we
changed from the train to a long distance bus
in Ulan Ude, still on Russian side. Quite close to the border, the
bus slowed down, and as it halted completely we saw a long queue of
tanks and other military vehicles lined along the road. The Russian
military apparently had some exercise going on, and as this panzar
parade crossed the road, we had time to enjoy the second part of
today's breakfast:
- bottled water (provided by the Russian railways)
- dark chocolate.
