In Kazan, our host Ija introduced us to a berry that in Russian is called kalina, which she and her daughter ate straight from the bush at Raifa monastery. It seems to be very much in season here now. In looks it's almost exactly like “punaherukka” (sorry for the lack of an English word), and grows in similar clusters to, but the taste is more like lingonberry, although even more sour. In Finnish, the berry is possibly called koiranhiesimarja, which some reports claim poisonous.

With plenty of sugar, Ija cooked a delicious, vitamin-rich jam of the berries, and served it to us mixed with hot water, which made a perfect drink after a chilly day outside. Now in Tobolsk – where it's really chilly – we bought some kalinas from a lady at the market, and tried to prepare the same. Ours tasted... healthy.

  • Self-made kalina juice
  • bread
  • gouda cheese
  • tomatoes
  • strawberry yogurt
  • pineapple juice
  • mint tea with lemon and honey
