10.15-10.45 AM, in the bungalow camp restaurant, Pulau Palambak

The residency in Pulau Palambak has been the longest time we've stayed put in one place – so long that we've managed to create ourselves a daily routine. It begins with a morning swim (P.P. is close to being the most perfect place for swimming we've ever visited), a shower, followed by three-pancake breakfast, after which we rest for a couple of hours before the lunchtime swim (usually with goggles and snorkel – and a t-shirt to protect from the scorching sun). Then lunch, which normally consists of fish or other protein source, stir-fried vegetables, rice, and fruit for dessert. After lunch we rest, read and occasionally brush our verandah clean of the sand we bring in between our toes, until it's time for an evening swim, and dinner at sunset. After dinner we retreat to our cottage again, and under the mosquito net, as the flying beasts are especially fierce on this island.

However, today the routine was disrupted. A demanding Dutch guest did not want to have pancakes for breakfast, and as it was a whole lot easier for Anas to cook the same thing for everyone, we got:

  • fried rice with vegetables
  • fried egg
  • salted peanuts
  • cucumber & tomato slices
  • shrimp crackers
  • tea

Having started the day in an out of the ordinary fashion, we kept making more exceptions: after lunch (which was served an hour later as usual) we were struck by an urge to be active, so we went kayaking.
