Less
than 24 hours aboard the MV Praha, and already our diet has changed
completely. We booked our trip through a travel agency based in
Wuppertal, but we couldn't have guessed that the ship we were
boarding in Singapore would also be managed from Germany, with a
German “Master” and three other officers on board. The walls of
the corridors and common spaces are decorated with paintings
portraying an explicitly North German variety of scenes and
landscapes (“Hamburger Seehafen”); we had our meals in
German-speaking company – Herren Stecher und Lutzke (the captain
and the chief engineer) mit Agnes und Herbert Volker (co-passengers)
aus Schweiz; and even the meals were adjusted to a German taste –
although with a hint of Russia, as one fifth of the crew is Russian;
including the cook.
It
also happened that our first morning on board was a “Seaman
Sunday”, which means that you get to order eggs of choice for
breakfast, and at lunch, ice cream is served. Why Thursdays are
labelled “Seaman Sundays”, no-one of the crew seemed to know.
Some speculated it derives from the old times when also animals were
carried on board, and Thursday was the day of cleaning the stables.
