One
of Elina's biggest motivations to travel to Australia was to see live
koalas. As it became clear that our time
in Australia would be very limited – just a rough ten days between
one sea journey and another – we wanted to make sure we wouldn't
miss the koalas, and booked a “Koala breakfast” at the Sydney
Wild Life zoo. What this meant in practice was a guided tour through
this exhibition of Australian animals before the zoo's official
opening hours (the shrieking children came in only later); ending at
the cantine – a large terrace overlooking the kangaroo yard, with
koalas hanging on bare torsos of trees in each end of the terrace.
That there were more than fifty people in between them, feasting on
their buffet breakfast and listening to the over-enthusiastic animal
keeper with an unbearably loud voice blabbering away about the poo of
these cuddly creatures, the koalas didn't seem to mind. Even when
these curious, noisy carnivores, smelling like the coffee and bacon
they just had, stuck their faces up close to the koalas' to have
their selfies taken, the gray and white furry rolls of zen
kept to what seemed like their routine: sleeping, yawning, scratching
themselves, eating leaves and falling asleep again.
