7.15-7.30 AM; Luang Phrabang southern bus station

This morning, Elina wasn't in the mood for breakfast. The bumps and curves along the mountain roads from Luang Namtha to Luang Phrabang had been a bit too much, and anticipating something similar, she chose to fast. Well, more for me...

  • 3 bananas
  • (a drop of) mixed fruit juice
  • Oreo cookies
  • water

In the end, the road wasn't half as bad (or the travel sickness pills were working), but other difficulties emerged. We had barely left Luang Phrabang when we stopped on the side of the road and the staff started rushing between the front and back of the bus, and making hasty phone calls. It turned out that the air-con was not working, and someone had to be called in to fix it. So we stood on the roadside, chatted and waited. There was also another Finn on the bus, the first one we've met by accident on this trip (we actually even made a bet about when we would come across the first Finn, and the oracle Elina guessed the date exactly, and won a dessert of choice). After two and half hours, the bus staff came to the conclusion that the problem was not fixable, and we would continue without air-con. Instead, they opened the emergency exit hatch on the bus ceiling, to provide adequate ventilation. At first this was a bliss for us as we were sitting right under the hatch and could enjoy the cool breeze, but in the afternoon it started raining, and the hatch couldn't be closed.

After 300 kilometres and 14 hours(!), and a series of further small setbacks, we arrived in Vientiane in pitch dark, four hours late of schedule.
